Who are we?

We believe there is too much sensitive information exposed on the Internet, whether through intentional data breaches or unintentional data leaks. Yet the knowledge, skills, and experience required to prevent them isn’t evenly distributed and is inaccessible for many organizations. We also think detecting, protecting, and securing sensitive information is a problem rooted in code, language, and design–not manual processes and spreadsheets.

UpGuard’s mission is to protect the world’s data and expand access to cybersecurity expertise. We obsessively seek out elegant, robust ways to enable our customers to find, acknowledge, and remediate cyber risk. That’s where you come in: we’re looking for a writer to join our growing Marketing team.

The Marketing team works across many types of initiatives at UpGuard–from our brand voice and websites to our quarterly event, UpGuard Summit. And since UpGuard’s main audience is other people who keep their companies secure, we agonize over and take pride in creating content that is user-friendly and more importantly, actionable. 

Why are we hiring this role?

Writers at UpGuard play an integral role in our Marketing team. You’ll be focused on depth and breadth–diving deep into our product suite, quickly becoming a subject matter expert. You’ll report into our VP of Marketing and closely collaborate with the entire organization, from Product to Sales to Customer Success.

You’ll have the opportunity to provide strategic direction on high priority projects, in addition to crafting elegant copy that distills complex concepts into clear, actionable language. You’ll work with peers across the company to influence and codify standards and documentation for writing. You’ll champion our users, who range from seasoned cybersecurity and risk management professionals to startups with varying levels of technical expertise to leading enterprises like NASA, NYSE, AT&T, Pagerduty, Rackspace, and Bill.com. The goal is to help retain our current and attract new customers through your content.

What will you accomplish?

  • Work with design, product, marketing, and sales to create the words that retain and attract customers
  • Shape (and scribe) our content strategy from website copy and features pages to blog posts and eBooks
  • Communicate complex product features and benefits in ways that speak to our users and help them understand and use our products
  • Create, maintain, and implement style guides and shared nomenclature across UpGuard
  • Write using best practices for inclusivity, accessibility, and SEO to reach users worldwide
  • Collaborate with our cybersecurity researchers to ensure their discoveries are easy to understand and widely read
  • What do we need from you?

  • 3+ years of experience working as a writer, content strategist, or SEO writer
  • Can embrace the highly technical nature of UpGuard and our products, and deliver intuitive solutions to our users
  • Are relentlessly user-focused
  • Can edit existing work or create new copy with input from stakeholders
  • Can write everything required, including website copy, emails, feature pages, blog content, press releases and eBooks
  • Can embrace a fast-paced, iterative work environment
  • Can integrate new tools into your workflow
  • Can provide evidence that your content ranks well
  • What would give you an edge?

  • A desire to build evergreen content, think the Wikipedia of cybersecurity
  • A track record of creating sales collateral that converts
  • An understanding of search intent and engagement signals, topic and funnel depth, and how content decays
  • Experience using Ahrefs, Clearscope, and Accuranker (or equivalents)
