About the team

The Engineering Community Lead works within the Engineering Practice group in Xero, which is a group responsible for ensuring world class engineering at Xero is the default.

Our Engineering Communities have great leadership and foster psychological safety. You'll be working with these groups and leaders to ensure they’re set up for success and trend towards positively changing the engineering culture to one of sustainable excellence.

Thriving communities are a key part of achieving Xero's technology vision to "be one of the most sustainably excellent software engineering companies in the world."

About the role

As our Engineering Community Lead, you’ll build and deliver programs that grow the Engineering community and empower organisers and contributors to do great work.

You’ll be working with Xero’s Engineering Leadership and enabling community leaders to deliver on their goals.

You will lead and manage our global community development initiatives. You will use your community leadership skills to shape Xero’s Engineering community experience and infrastructure, feed into Xero’s delivery system with community needs and requirements, build growth and engagement, and more. You will help connect, celebrate, amplify the Engineering community, assist new communities as they form and support existing communities as they grow. You will help our community builders to think bigger, be the best they can be, and succeed more. You’ll work across teams within Xero to promote the community’s voice within our different internal teams. You should be a content expert, superb communicator, humble facilitator, and motivated marketer.

What you'll do:

  • Build and deliver capabilities that grow the Engineering community and empower organisers and contributors to do great work.
  • Take a data driven approach to community enablement, on-board, and work with our teams to ensure community members have a simple and powerful experience.
  • Develop content that promotes the longevity and sustainability of fast growing, organically built communities with high impact outcomes.
  • Analyse and assess how we can lead the industry with powerful, engaged, thoughtful, and surprising community engagement and strategy.
  • Build relationships within the industry and community to help engage all groups, be successful, and deliver great work and collaboration.
  • Work with Product and Engineering teams on product roadmaps for community features and needs.
  • Be active in other communities and platforms to help foster collaboration and relationships with other communities and organisations.
  • Provide feedback to Engineering and Product leadership on community highlights and needs.
  • What you’ll bring with you:

  • A growth mindset - understands that competency is not fixed but is enhanced through dedication and hard work.
  • Great communication skills. Speaks and writes clearly and articulately without being overly verbose or talkative, and relying on jargon.
  • Data-informed - champion a scientific, evidence-based approach.
  • Experience participating in and building communities.
  • Experience with working in open source and other online communities.
  • Public speaking, blogging, and content development.
  • Facilitating complex and sensitive community management situations with humility, judgment, tact, and humor.
  • Integrating company brand, voice, and messaging into developed content.
