ROLE OVERVIEW

The Infrastructure team mission in Shippit is to empower our engineers to deploy, operate and support anything, anywhere, in order to quickly ship value with confidence. This team is taking ownership of base elements of infrastructure, patterns for deployment, security, observability and operations. They interact with the engineering teams to consult and support through their design, path to production and operations lifecycles.  

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Lead Infrastructure Engineer will drive the development and implementation of base elements of cloud infrastructure, enabling engineering teams with patterns and solutions for running their code in production. We are in the process of migrating away from our monolith into microservices using Kafka and Kubernetes as our foundation. We have scaled our engineering team from 12 to 40 in the last two years. The primary goal for the Lead Infrastructure engineer is to enable these changes by keeping the focus on Developers experience, time to production, security, observability, consistency.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate and support product teams by building a platform or solutions that help the success of the product
  • Design and implement infrastructure as code
  • Share and learn infrastructure and other knowledge with product teams
  • Design and implement build tools, services and way to enhance the developer experience
  • Monitor and collect appropriate information to help us understand our infrastructure, applications and overall health of the business
  • Understand and help create appropriate SLO/SLA for product teams with the 4 key metrics ideas in mind
  • Design and implement Cloud solution that focuses on availability, security, reliability and performance 
  • Production support, root cause analysis and post-mortem 
  • POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Infrastructure as code tools - terraform
  • Container and container orchestration - Kubernetes
  • Experience with Cloud Computing Platform - AWS
  • Experience or understanding in cloud-native architecture and concepts like availability, security, reliability and cost
  • Knowledge of what great CI/CD looks like
  • Knowledge of what good logging and monitoring looks like
  • Programming and TDD experience, in a scripting language like python, go, ruby etc

  • Provides leadership and direction to the team
  • Sets clear expectations with stakeholders and the team
  • Ensures and encourages a free flow of information across departments
  • Uses the performance review process to coach and develop staff
