The Opportunity at Culture Amp

Culture Amp is looking for a Principal Engineer to play a pivotal role within our Performance Camp. If you love using your system design and broad technical expertise to build and drive a technology roadmap whilst influencing and inspiring other engineers then we’d love to speak with you.

There are three pillars to the role, strategic impact, leadership and acting as a technical owner for large parts of our code base:

Strategic impact: The Principal Engineer acts as a “chief architect” for one or more areas of our technical ecosystem. You will offer significant strategic vision and can take a high-level 3-5 year plan for growth at a business level and work with camp leadership to translate that into a strategic technology roadmap.

Technical Expertise: This is a coaching and leading role, but also the most senior technical advisor to camp leadership, you will be an important influencer to core projects as well as experimental work. When presented with a complex problem, process, or existing system, you can reduce its complexity to get more done with less work. Working with our tech leads to provide technical guidance across multiple teams. Your technical guidance will mean team members working with you will feel like they are going to leave with something significantly better than they arrived with and have learnt something along the way.

Leadership: Influencing and inspiring other engineers and tech leads will be paramount in the success of this role. You will facilitate cross-team work and influence different areas of the business beyond any single team or group. You will use your leadership expertise to drive groups of disparate interests to decisions, seeing these through to impact. You will be able to help make pragmatic decisions, balancing strategic and tactical needs. You will help camp leadership manage engineering risk and make sure we are making the right trade-off calls.

What Skills You’ll Bring to Our Camp

Software Engineering at Culture Amp is an inclusive practice distributed across cross-functional, lightweight Agile teams, many of which are remote-friendly, and all of which embrace flexible work arrangements. You should enjoy being surrounded by talented Engineering Leads, learning from others, as well as playing an instrumental role in their development. To top it off, we hope you’ll share our passion for culture and changing the world of work for the better.

  • You will have a sustained track record of creating major improvements to entire systems around stability, security, performance, and scalability. It might not have gone perfectly but your lessons learnt are just important as your wins.
  • You have strong broad technical skills, you can lead us through security, ISO, privacy, SRE and optimisation challenges and opportunities. You'll have a good depth of technical experiences to draw from to guide us across the stack, and can serve as a technical owner of large parts of our code base.
  • You are energised at the prospect of mentoring and growing engineers and tech leaders, but also up for helping grow engineering knowledge outside of engineering
  • You are adept at communicating complex technical matters in a clear, understandable way to non-technical people
  • You naturally think out loud, bringing others into conversations and so encouraging cross pollination of ideas.
