Xero is a beautiful, easy-to-use platform that helps small businesses and their accounting and bookkeeping advisors grow and thrive.

At Xero, our purpose is to make life better for people in small business, their advisors, and communities around the world. This purpose sits at the centre of everything we do. We support our people to do the best work of their lives so that they can help small businesses succeed through better tools, information and connections. Because when they succeed they make a difference, and when millions of small businesses are making a difference, the world is a more beautiful place.

What’s the role?

Data Reliability is an enabling product group that strives to empower Xero to be reliable and trusted. We do this by providing Xero’s Product and Technology team with support, guidance and internal products that make it easy to build and scale a reliable experience for our customers.

The team is currently on a transformational journey to evolve our offering towards Data Reliability Engineering, a new practice in the technology landscape. For Xero, this is acknowledgement that the traditional role of Database Administrator has evolved as part of the DevOps movement, and infrastructure as code revolution. We are embracing the growing need to manage our data holistically as though it is a product, formalise the things we’ve always done into engineering ‘best practices’, and leverage automation to enable Xero’s data to scale.

As Head of Engineering you play a critical role in evolving our engineering capability, practices and culture, both within our team and globally across Xero.

What you'll do:

  • Lead, grow, and manage a technical leadership team and a portfolio of engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions to our internal users.
  • Work closely with Product Management, Architecture and other Engineering Leaders to continuously improve Xero’s technology platform so that it meets customer needs, is secure, performant and highly available.
  • Contribute to building a high performing Data Reliability leadership team that is tasked with shifting the culture and capability of Xero to make data a shared concern of all product teams.
  • Discover and deliver an engineering strategy that aligns to our product strategy, evolves our engineering capability and practices, and furthers the Xero technology strategy.
  • Ensure that the performance of our engineering teams is actively measured and monitored, and blockers are resolved in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Lead your direct reports and enable them to thrive in the organization, coaching them in their career development and goals.
  • Work with your peers and the engineering leadership community across Xero to influence broader engineering uplift.
  • What you'll bring with you:

  • Experience managing managers, and leading teams of engineers in product or technology companies.
  • Experience building a culture of engineering excellence, and uplifting engineering practice.
  • An ability to plan and implement strategic change, whilst getting buy-in from stakeholders across all levels of the business
  • Self-awareness and empathy.
  • Growth mindset, you understand that competency is not fixed but is enhanced through dedication and hard work
  • A deep understanding of product delivery.
  • You do not need to have specialised experience in data engineering for this role.
