About the Position

We're growing. Fast. Our global expansion necessitates a talented individual to act as our Principal Engineer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mentoring devops engineers and developers in modern engineering approaches, including CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure-as-Code and deployment strategies
  • Providing technical leadership and evangelism across the business
  • Developing and improving platform architecture
  • Assist with building a technical roadmap to improve the operation and architecture of our customer-facing applications
  • Participation and leadership in solution design/architecture discussions, in collaboration with other SMEs
  • Participation in secondary on-call rotation to support trouble resolution during non-business hours
  • Driving continuous improvement of practices and solutions

Development and Delivery:

  • Contribute to technical and functional design
  • Identify architectural deficiencies and identify solutions, with a consistent leaning towards “shift-left” and automation

Organisational:

  • Adhere to operational procedures such as time keeping, task allocation, status reporting
  • Actively contribute to internal programs

Professional Development:

  • Be knowledgeable and ‘up to date’ with domain knowledge including industry trends, technologies, frameworks and techniques
  • Be knowledgeable and ‘up to date’ with Whispir products
  • Proactively seek opportunities to broaden and deepen knowledge base and proficiencies
  • Share acquired skills and knowledge of competitor or complementary products with the team

About You

We would like you to have:

  • Ability to mentor and set technical direction to teams of engineers
  • Ability to explain, discuss and document complex technical concepts clearly
  • A good understanding of architectural best practices
  • Experience with automation or coding in a Linux environment
  • Understanding of devops approaches and how to implement them in practice
  • Experience architecting, building and running services in the cloud
  • Knowledge of software deployment patterns and processes, and building CI/CD pipelines
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

 We would prefer you to have:

  • Extensive experience of architecting, building and running environments in AWS
  • Strong understanding of both operational and development practices
  • Skills with Configuration Management and Infrastructure as Code tools. Preferably Ansible, Packer, Terraform, Kubernetes, and Docker
  • Knowledge of observability approaches, preferably with exposure to New Relic, SumoLogic/Splunk and Prometheus tooling
  • An understanding of the challenges supporting infrastructure or platform services in a customer-facing operational environment 
  • Knowledge of best practices for implementing security and compliance controls in cloud environments
  • Working knowledge of a programming language
