Atlassian can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity, assuming candidates have eligible working rights and a sufficient timezone overlap with their team. As our offices re-open, Atlassians can choose to work remotely or return to an office, unless it’s necessary for the role to be performed in the office. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.

A Shield Engineer in Atlassian’s Build Engineering team supports Atlassian developers that use our world-class continuous integration (CI) systems. You’ll respond to queries that require a wide variety of knowledge across many systems and tech stacks and ensure our users' perspective is represented within our team. You’ll also be responding to incidents, analysing trends in user queries, running projects to help reduce support load on the team and automating away repetitive work.

About our team
Our team has been providing the underlying Continuous Integration services that power the development of Atlassian’s products and services. Despite being a small team, we provide the platform that allows Atlassian developers to run thousands of CI builds per day, ensuring it remains fast, reliable and easy to use.

If you enjoy automating repetitive tasks, investigating and unclogging bottlenecks and working in areas that span through cloud infrastructure, operating systems and application environments then this is the team for you!

Roughly once every couple of months you'll be rostered on-call for a week to ensure the availability of our critical systems. With our global footprint, there'll also be opportunities to travel to our offices in the USA to connect with our Silicon Valley and Austin-based users.

What do we do?

  • Following modern development best-practices and apply these to our operational work. We often find ourselves inventing innovative approaches not seen elsewhere to meet the constantly evolving CI needs of Atlassian developers
  • We work to scale our systems to keep pace with Atlassian’s own growth and prioritise time for innovation and experimentation, and are always on the lookout for new technologies or tooling to help us achieve our goals
  • We consult as domain specialists to our developers to help them adopt tried and true practices in their CI pipelines and debug any particularly tricky issues they have with using our platform
  • On your first day, we'll expect you to have experience in:

  • providing support to a technical user base
  • supporting Java-based applications
  • Linux system administration
  • automating repetitive tasks with scripts/apps
  • SQL and RDBMS management
  • It'll be great if you have experience in:

  • experience in incident management
  • good familiarity with CI/CD concepts and tooling (Bamboo, Jenkins, etc.)
  • software development skills across a variety of tech stacks
  • knowledge of and experience with DevOps practice and philosophy
  • experience with container management and microservices architectures such as Docker & Kubernetes
  • building and maintaining infrastructure in a cloud provider (e.g. AWS)
  • More about our benefits

Whether you work in an office or a distributed team, Atlassian is highly collaborative and yes, fun! To support you at work (and play) we offer some fantastic perks: ample time off to relax and recharge, flexible working options, five paid volunteer days a year for your favourite cause, an annual allowance to support your learning & growth, unique ShipIt days, a company paid trip after five years and lots more.
