How you’ll make an impact

The Lead Portfolio Architect is responsible for the overall technical direction of a portfolio of products or  technology capabilities. They define and lead the execution of the technical runway that supports the  development and evolution of features, decouples components from the existing codebase, and improves  developer productivity, performance, security and data stewardship.   

The Lead Portfolio Architect works closely with General Managers and Product Managers to ensure the  overall technical roadmap is closely aligned to and integrated into their agreed plans.   

The Lead Portfolio Architect supports other technical leaders for each portfolio to create technical  roadmaps that describe the technical direction for each portfolio and form part of the relevant technical  roadmap.   

As a team, the Lead Portfolio Architect and Product and Platform Architecture teams work to increase the  technical efficiency and effectiveness of the product and platform development function, while retaining  Xero’s ability to remain responsive to our customers through short development cycle times and high  roadmap throughout.

  • Ability to discern business and user  requirements and develop technical  requirements from them.  
  • Ability to motivate in a team-oriented,  collaborative environment.  
  • Ability to articulate ideas to both  technical and non-technical audiences.  
  • Superior analytical, evaluative, and  problem-solving abilities.  
  • Ability to set and manage priorities  judiciously. 
  • Extensive experience in developing  web-based software applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to envision  large-scale web-based services that meet consumer customer/stakeholder needs  or solve business problems.  
  • Familiar with multiple software  development methodologies and styles  
  • Has contributed to one or more open  source projects.  
  • Extensive knowledge of CSS, XHTML, one  or more JavaScript frameworks, and  AJAX.  
  • Knowledge of web standards.  
  • Knowledge of internet protocols and RFC  standards, database management  systems, and revision control systems. 
  • Familiarity with information security  vulnerabilities and risk management.  
  • Familiarity with consumer privacy and  payments industry compliance  requirements.  
  • Relevant qualifications, ideally in  software engineering. 
  • What you'll do...

  • Work with GM(s) and Product Managers to develop a clear understanding of their priorities for their  portfolio and ensure technical roadmaps support these priorities 
  •  Provide technical leadership for your architecture team, providing feedback and  guidance on significant projects.  
  • Play an active role in the global architecture team actively contributing to Xero-wide projects and  strategies and providing the viewpoint of your portfolio.  
  • Develop and contribute to technical strategy for your portfolio, working with other technical  leaders to ensure proposed solutions are scalable and using best practices. 
  • Proactively identifies and resolves any architectural issues that impact the speed at which the  development team can deliver features and encourage architects to do the same in their sphere of  influence.
  • Identify technology trends that could be risks or opportunities for your portfolio, and assess and  share the impact of these trends. 
  • Build an effective team of architects that continually improves and is respected by the   development teams for helping them deliver value to our customers  
  • Ensure we attract and retain top talent, and improve and develop the talent already in the team  
  • Provide line management and coaching for architects within the team, including 1:1s, personal  development plans and pastoral care  
  • For any work where it is agreed the architecture team lead the execution of that work, ensure that  the work is effectively managed and delivers a positive ROI and is seen as successful by  stakeholders.
