This role is remote for the remainder of 2020, & until it is safe to return to the office.
The key mission of this role is to build a world-class legal team and own Deputy’s legal strategy. As a trusted advisor to, and key member of, the leadership team, this leader will provide counsel and guidance which supports Deputy’s overall business objectives and aligns to our company values.
Trusted advisor: Provide high quality, strategic and commercially focused legal and governance advice to the CEO, Board Directors and the executive team to support Deputy’s overall business objectives.Build world-class team: Lead, empower and grow a world-class legal team as the business scales.Oversee legal strategy: Work closely with functional and regional leaders across Deputy on a wide range of legal matters including the drafting and negotiation of commercial contracts, vendor agreements, compliance (including privacy and security compliance), IP protection and risk management.Fundraising: Support the CEO and CFO in capital raising efforts.Business partner: Partner with the CFO and VP of People in compliance, insurance and human resources matters, including the administration of Deputy’s ESOP and mobility strategy.Manage external relationships: Manage outside counsel and consultants globally regarding mergers and acquisitions, regulatory compliance, and corporate matters.Monitor legal developments: Monitor legislative/regulatory changes and provide advice to proactively identify issues which may impact strategy, operational issues or business processes.Risk management: Develop appropriate risk management frameworks and systems that facilitate the ability of Deputy to remain innovative.Compliance: Develop policies and practices to ensure compliance with all relevant legal matters, including data privacy and security. Support attainment of ISO27001 certification.Corporate governance: Lead corporate governance efforts, including maintenance of corporate records, and statutory filings. Provide support for company secretarial matters.Dispute resolution: Oversee legal strategy regarding the prosecution and defence of lawsuits, arbitration and related conflict resolution matters.Company representation: Represent Deputy externally, including managing relationships with investor legal departments and government and/or industry bodies.
DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
You likely have 10+ years of relevant legal experience, gained either at a law firm or in house, and are qualified to practice law in Australia. USA experience and/or qualifications is highly desirable, as is experience in a SaaS or high-growth technology business. You have experience managing a global team and supporting a global business.Humbitious: Humility is the number #1 value of Deputy. Intellectually Curious: Proactive personality and strong eagerness to learn about the business, the industry, and new areas of the law and applicable regulations.Problem Solver: You have a track record of creative problem-solving, excellent written and oral communication skills, and creation of strong and trusted cross-functional relationships.
