The opportunity at Culture Amp

We’re looking for Senior Enablement Engineers, specialising in Ruby, to join our newly forming Back End Foundations team.

If you’re excited by the idea of empowering your fellow back end engineers and learning engineering enablement — covering scalable software architecture, tooling ecosystems, and the developer experience — then this role may be for you!

As part of the team, you’ll work closely with the back end engineering Practice Director to:

  • Meet with product teams to understand their needs, then implement and maintain tooling to streamline their work in building back end systems
  • Spread understanding of our back end tooling through documentation, evangelism, and pairing with engineers in the flow of work

Specifically, you’ll be aiming to shave weeks off the time needed by other teams to get started with new services and patterns, and then make it easy for those teams to build consistent, well-integrated parts of the Culture Amp technical ecosystem. This will take the form of building application frameworks and templates for a range of common service types, libraries to implement our sensible defaults, as well as libraries for consuming shared data specified via OpenAPI and Avro schemas, and much more.

What you bring to the team

You should:

  • Have extensive experience with Ruby.
  • Have demonstrated experience with (or enthusiasm for) back end engineering enablement and sustainability: scalable architectures, tooling design and ecosystems, and the developer experience.
  • Thoughtful and empathetic communication, especially in technical writing for other engineers. You should love good docs.

In addition, you would ideally:

  • Have an interest or experience in package authorship and maintenance
  • Be a polyglot engineer, comfortable crossing language/platform/stack boundaries when necessary
  • Be able to support other engineers in the flow of work by pairing in real time on problems at the code level. You should be able to jump into unfamiliar contexts and get up to speed quickly when necessary.
  • Have insight/empathy into the adjoining parts of our stack, such as cloud infrastructure, front end systems, and the overall web platform

The Product Group at Culture Amp is an inclusive practice made of cross-functional, agile, and remote-friendly teams, all of which embrace flexible work arrangements. You should enjoy being surrounded by talented individuals, learning from others, as well as contributing to their development. To top it off, we hope you’ll share our passion for culture and changing the world of work for the better.

Research shows that candidates from underrepresented backgrounds often don’t apply for roles unless they meet all the criteria — unlike majority candidates that meet significantly fewer of the requirements.

We strongly encourage you to apply if you’re at all interested: we’d love to learn how you can amplify our team with your unique experience!

We believe that inclusive businesses are better, not only for company performance, but for the world. We have a strong commitment to anti-racism and lead by example. Every step we make as a business towards anti-racism is another step we can take to support our customers in making a better world (of work). View our current commitments to anti-racism.

We ensure you have the tools and support you need to thrive, both inside and outside of work:

  • A MacBook — for you to do great work where it suits you
  • Share options — it’s important to us that everyone is an owner and can share in our success
  • Excellent parental leave and in-work support program — for those starting or growing their family
  • Flexible working arrangements — wherever we can we aim to make work support the life you want to lead
  • Fun and inclusive digital and (in the future) in-person events

And most importantly: an opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives.
