Meet Athena, the Home Loan Wrecker

Athena Home Loans launched in 2019 to help Aussie borrowers save money and pay down their home loan faster. Athena’s digital mortgage platform radically simplifies the application process passing on the savings to customers as better rates.

Customers switching to Athena are saving ~ $60,000 over the life of their loans. Since launch, Athena has settled over $1.9b in home loans, and saved borrowers over $200m in interest savings – and grown to become one of Australia’s largest fintechs.

93% of borrowers want to pay their home loan faster, but only 1-in-5 think their bank wants them to succeed. Legacy lenders are failing borrowers in meeting this challenge. Athena designed the mortgage experience from the ground up to deliver on this mission. And it is having an impact – 80% of Athena’s customers are already ahead.

Borrowers are sick of loyalty tax, where new customers get great rates and existing customers see theirs creep upwards. Loyalty tax has grown to over 50bp, costing borrowers billions. In an Australian first, Athena promises to never offer new customers a lower interest rate than existing customers with Automatic Rate Match.

Only 7% of home loan borrowers refinance each year. The majority could get a better deal. Legacy lenders use complexity as a superpower: too hard, too slow, too little transparency, too much small print. Athena’s innovative digital platform has been designed to eliminate these barriers.

Athena has built Australia’s first cloud-native home loan platform, covering the full value chain to acquire, originate, service and fund residential mortgages. Fintechs targeting mortgages are typically only focusing on a narrow layer of the value chain (e.g. originations), then handing back to legacy bank systems. By tackling the full stack, Athena aims to cut the cost of running a mortgage business by 70% vs. legacy players, providing sustainable advantage.

Athena has raised $115m in equity funding to date in four funding rounds from leading investors including AirTree Ventures, Apex Capital, AustralianSuper, Hostplus, Macquarie Bank, RESIMAC Group, Rice Warner, Square Peg and Sunsuper. Most recently in October 2019, Athena closed $70m in Series C funding – the largest ever Australia-led venture capital investment round.

Customer feedback has been phenomenal. On Trustpilot, Athena has the highest rating of Excellent, with a score of 4.6/5 from almost 800 reviews. NPS is +70, exponentially higher than the Big 4 average NPS of +2.8 and bank industry average of +8.2.

Finally, in the past year Athena has been recognised amongst multiple consumer lending and industry awards including Canstar Outstsanding Value and Innovation Excellence awards, RateCity and Mozo awards, and Fintech Lender and Fintech CEO of the year.

Role overview

Athena wants to liberate not just customers from the shackles of their home loans, but also ourselves - from closed doors, roadblocks and impact-less jobs. Our people shape us, and we shape them. What 10 of us achieve together takes 100 in a large enterprise. And we’re looking for a key player to join our kick-ass collective.

Our new Originations Technical Business Analyst will be curious, insightful and most importantly a critical thinker. You’ll be looking for an opportunity to flex your analysis muscles working directly within a product team, in a collocated agile environment with squads and the broader business able to execute rapidly together.

Your strength is obvious in producing masterful business and functional requirements, with a strong lean toward working directly with engineers to translate these into solutions, system and architecture design with a #moveatspeed mindset!

Core priorities this role will focus on are:

  • Define business and functional requirements: Quickly define clear business requirements working across the business, product managers and squads, minimising back and forth to support an agile delivery lifecycle. Translate these into detailed functional requirements.
  • Create user stories, acceptance criteria and prioritise the epic’s backlog: Define great user stories that summarise business and functional requirements as well as solution designs. Work with the squad to establish acceptance criteria conditions to ensure expected outcomes deliver. Map out user stories and prioritise into a backlog for the epic, working with the PO to incorporate into the master backlog.
  • Act as knowledge integrator: Translate business needs for squad consumption. Translate squad questions into business decisions. Reduce the amount of time the squads spends refining tickets, or in meetings by the efficient distribution of information
  • Document the application and system solutions: Work with the experts, engineers and the squad to analyse the system, functionality and architecture. Where required, clearly document and visualise the current state and target solutions, including defining data models, non-functional requirements and system integration analysis
  • Research & outline development scope: Work with the Product Managers and Product Owners as required to critically understand the context of the problem space, pain points or future opportunities. Support the PM/PO to form the initial requirements by translating high level vision into something realistic across technical solution and business domains
  • Support the squad to deliver a quality outcome: Support the squad and developers during development to ensure acceptance criteria is able to be met. Work with the squad and the QA team to define user acceptance test cases, including execution where needed. Work with the story owners and broader business to complete business acceptance testing, communicate the changes and any training required
  • Maintain the product: Perform analysis on incidents and problems as they arise. Make the process of root cause and solution identification as seamless as possible working between the squad and the business to clarify what is required and how it is solved. Work with the Product Owner to prioritise any fixes or changes that need to be delivered as part of the squads backlog

Target Profile

To be successful, we need someone who is experienced in transforming financial technology products. We’re looking for 5+ years of working in any disciplines across product management, originations and lending management, financial analysis, portfolio management, product development, analytics and data, engineering, operational management, and transformation, change or project management. Ideally 3+ years of this has been as a business analyst with a technical lean, or a technical analyst with good business exposure.

To be successful you’ll need live and breathe these attributes:

  • Numeracy, data and logic are signature strengths – you are highly analytical, with a logical engineering brain and are really good with numbers
  • Strong critical thinking – you have to be able to think deeply, get concepts really quickly, be able to string strategies together and relitigate them on the spot
  • Deliver real outcomes – this is different to any big corporate you have ever worked at. There is no busy work, there are no jobs for managers of things that can’t do the things. The gap between your action and your impact is wafer thin. You need to be able to make valuable real-life outcomes happen, and quickly
  • Super collaborative – no egos, elbows or brilliant assholes
  • Flexible mindset – for Athena to grow, you need to grow and not be capped out. Be prepared to change other peoples minds and for them to change yours. You need to enjoy this.

At Athena we are committed to a workplace that embraces diversity, equality, and inclusion. Athenians are free to let their own brand of freak fly.
