Take a seat on our rocket ship and join us on our mission to change education around the world. We're a rapidly growing SaaS company and are looking for a Software Engineer (Elixir) to join our Product Engineering team.

Who we are?

Xplor and QK Technologies have recently joined forces to become an international team of over 130 people hailing from offices in Melbourne (HQ), Brisbane and London. Being part of the TSG Group, we all share the passion for education and innovative technology and want to support those who make it great.

Our product suite is changing education by helping childcare services and educators easily manage all aspects of their operations, as well as by connecting parents with their children's well-being and growth.

About our Engineering Culture

At Xplor, Engineering serves one main purpose: to enable and complement the business strategies and goals. Technology choices should always be backed by solving real business problems, rather than "wouldn't it be cool?"

We care deeply about adding value to our customers and users. We think deeply and move quickly. We constantly evaluate the balance between speed and quality, to ensure we have the most desirable outcomes given the constraints.

Every person is encouraged to take ownership of their work, and really be part of the ongoing effort of making education great. We are not looking for programmers, we are looking for problem solvers.

Our expectations for Software engineers are;

Able to explain complex programming concepts such as multi-threading, background execution, common architectural and design patterns, services, bluetooth, graphics rendering and custom animations. They will be able to contribute to our Engineering culture and bring lateral problem-solving skills. We do a lot of pair programming, so Software Engineers need to be comfortable with our collaborative way of working.

What will I be doing as a Software Engineer in the Elixir team?

In a nutshell, you’ll create robust and reusable code to our existing Office platform - the platform that helps childcare centres know exactly how their service is performing. Office helps them with staff ratios, reduced paperwork and everything they need to meet regulations. Furthermore:

  • You’ll work with your Team Lead on improving craft and business context
  • You’ll work with your team on completing tasks and participate in technical discussions
  • You’ll contribute to our engineering culture and our technical solutions

What would make me a good candidate?

We care more about the values you could add, rather than simply ticking checkboxes. However, some of the criteria we are looking for are.

  • We understand that not many people will have first-hand experience with Elixir, therefore we expect you to have excellent knowledge in at least one programming language, e.g. Ruby, Python or JavaScript, etc
  • You have a good understanding of OOP or FP fundamentals
  • You have experience working on large and complex software projects
  • You have previous experience working with modern MVC frameworks
  • You have experience with relational databases and unit testing
  • You have experience in front-end development
  • You have excellent independent problem-solving intuitions
  • You are able to balance the tests vs delivery pressure
  • You have excellent communication skills
  • You are eager to learn and to improve, especially on picking up Elixir if you don’t already have the experience
  • You are able to think beyond programming, e.g. product, customer and business
