Sometimes, we recruiters struggle to just make words happen. We panic and then use “awesome” a lot. “Leading” and “cutting-edge”. Then we might throw in “opportunity of a lifetime” or “these gigs don’t come around often”.
And don’t get me started on “Job Of The Week” or “hot off the press”. What makes something ‘Job Of The Week’?
But, sometimes, we don’t really know what we’re talking about. Sometimes, we fail to express how excited we are about said role and how big of a deal it is.
Well, not me, friends. Not this role. I won’t succumb to such shortcomings, because I am REALLY good at words BUT ALSO we are here to talk about the Director of Marketing role at… 99designs.
See? This one really is kind of a big deal.
Can you tell me a little bit about 99designs?
Sure! 99designs by Vista is the world’s global creative platform that makes it easy for clients and designers to work together to create designs they love.
Since 2008, our freelance community has brought more than one million creative projects to life for thousands of genius entrepreneurs, savvy small business owners, and brands with big ideas. As part of the Vista family, which includes VistaPrint and VistaCreate, 99designs helps small businesses thrive with expert design at their fingertips.
That sounds great, but talk to me about culture?
Covering culture in job ads… it’s not easy to do. I have a lot that I can point to about programs, benefits and initiatives. Because we don't just talk about it.
But if I may - I’d like to provide some of my thoughts.
There are a few key things I’ve noticed. Collaboration. A word overused. But there is a real sense of community here. This is quite possibly one of the most CX and PX-driven organisations I’ve ever seen and everyone has a role to play. There is great trust and autonomy, but also support.
We are a people-first business, a safe space to share your ideas, and be who you are and we've unlocked a way to get the best out of people.
This has brought about high performance, close-knit teams that work well cross-functionally, and have done great things during a period of considerable change and growth. We are considered and really champion diversity, inclusion, and belonging in all forms. We are leading the way in it.
What about the role?
I see this role as both a marketing leader and a business leader.
So, the first part… To grow, lead, nurture, support and inspire a team of circa 25 people located all around the world. From a marketing perspective, this is a diverse, cross-functional and cutting-edge marketing team and you’ll lead this as it continues to grow and scale.
Build on integration with Vista. There is already a strong foundation here, but work on things like - culture, ways of working, and how we scale together.
Also, how do we integrate ourselves even more internally within 99designs? Are we visible and working as effectively as we can with Product, Design, Customer Ops and Technology?
Business leadership… You are part of the leadership team and are the voice of marketing. Help shape, influence, collaborate and drive decision-making and outcomes for the broader business.
I’ve kept this high-level and brief and it’s something I’m happy to delve into in more detail over a conversation but it really is the opportunity of a lifetime.
Whom do I need to be?
Experience in managing and leading teams is a must. Whether it is only local or remote/international as well, is absolutely fine. But there is a real need to have built and led teams.
Although this is a big strategy and leadership role if we cast our minds on the more tactical aspects of marketing, this role would lean more heavily into content, brand, organic and product marketing.
You have grown with a startup before. You know what scaling looks like - you’ve done it and been in the thick of it.
A consumer focus is a must and experience with SME is beneficial, too, as well as understanding and experience in eCommerce and/or freemium models.
If this sounds interesting and like it might be for you, please apply and say hi! These gigs don’t come around often!
