As a Development Manager, you will be responsible for the product development teams working on Xero’s Products and their technical practices and standards.
Your job, along with your development manager peers, is to build a cohesive thought leading engineering community which rapidly delivers value to our customers and continually improves. By doing so you’ll contribute to Xero achieving its goals.

You’ll be one of two development managers looking after our engineering pods in the APAC Tax group, responsible for our annual and sales tax products in the Asia Pacific region; including AU Tax, AU BAS, TPAR, Singapore, NZ Tax, and NZ GST.
This role will give you the opportunity to work with both mature established products and teams, as well as teams building new solutions for opportunities in our new growth markets.

What you'll do

  • Build an effective team of developer and QA experts that continually improve and deliver value to our customers
  • Ensure we attract and retain top talent, and improve and develop the talent already in the team
  • Ensure that test strategies and approaches employed by the teams are the most effective and efficient ones possible given the current state of the art and the nature of our codebase
  • Ensure that standards like the definition of ready, definition of done, and any coding standards / approaches are effective and making the development teams efficient
  • Cultivate a fun, rewarding, innovative and results-driven culture that lives and breathes our Xero values
  • Establish a structure of management, and peer feedback mechanisms for your team that supports high performance and personal and professional development in a way which is consistent with product team culture
  • Lead the salary review process and work with Partner BU leadership and PX to identify creative ways to motivate, acknowledge, reward and retain top talent
  • Work closely with the leaders within the team eg people leaders, product managers, and product architects, to form an effective team who jointly are accountable for the delivery and support of the Products
  • Collaborate and advocate to ensure there is appropriate levels of investment in technical process improvement, tooling, technical re-invention and non-functional requirements to achieve short and long term value for our customers and Xero
  • Ensure that our change management, release management and incident management processes are best practice within the software industry
  • Take deliberate and calculated risks and experiment with our product development process to find ways to accelerate the creation of value for our customers and Xero. This includes considering partnerships and acquisitions
  • Work closely with colleagues from other disciplines including directors, product owners, designers, and agile coaches to continually deliver quality software that solves real customer problems

  • Extensive experience working with software development projects at scale
  • Demonstrated experience in defining software development best practice through experimentation and observation of successes
