Interested in working in a cross-discipline team, with an emphasis on collaboration? Are you looking to influence and improve engineering patterns as a codebase scales-out to support our customers? If yes, then a senior engineer role within Camp Career will be just right for you! As we aim to help 100 million people create a better world of work, we need to build out a product that can support a growing number of users.

We are looking for a senior engineer to join the team. They would have a solid understanding of Ruby and building Rails applications; know how to write performant code and implement well designed APIs; break down complex problems into solutions we can experiment and iterate over. As well as flexing their system architecture and creativity muscles.

You would be working with a Rails API and helping to grow our current backend focussed engineers, through technical coaching and pairing. We collaborate as a team to solve customer problem statements and work closely with design.

We have a remote-first culture and this position can be based anywhere from Australia or New Zealand. This role can be fully remote or a hybrid if you are in Melbourne. We encourage you to work in the way that best suits you.Join us on our mission to make a better world of work

The Opportunity

Culture Amp started as a market-leading, category-defining Employee Engagement and feedback platform. In 2019 we added an award winning performance solution to our product offering, which empowers our customers to understand and grow employee performance in a Culture First way. Our Career product group owns this platform and works in mission-based teams on areas of this offering.

As an engineer, you will be helping ideate, improve and build our features, such as 1-on-1 conversations, goal setting, development and performance management, as well as encouraging and facilitating meaningful feedback. You will be using the tools yourself, so we take great pride in what we deliver. We encourage our teams to work in the open and collaborate across camps.

The role we have open in this team is for a Senior Engineer that can be more back end focused. We use Ruby on Rails on the back-end, React with TypeScript on the front-end and all hosted in AWS.  Our engineers participate in engineering practice meetings to self-organise and improve our stack. Examples of improvements from these meetings are E2E testing (using Playwright) across our important routes, DRY structs and monads on the back-end, and a GraphQL API. These practice meetings are a great opportunity to share learnings and bring best practices into our codebase.

Software Engineering at Culture Amp is an inclusive practice distributed across cross-functional, lightweight Agile teams, which are remote-friendly, and all of which embrace flexible work arrangements. You will be surrounded by talented engineers, learning from others, as well as sharing your knowledge with them as well.

Here’s some of the upcoming work you’ll be involved in;

  • The team will be focussing on improving our in-product visualisations; this includes designing and building the systems to support our product vision
  • We have built a good understanding of our domains and their boundaries, now we need to migrate them to their own services and make sure we have a strong focus on performance, security, observability, and continuously improving our codebases
  • We have a technical and product journey we are currently on. It is a great time to come into the team, using your influence to build the best product possible
  • Working with other engineers and providing technical coaching. Sharing your wealth of knowledge with the team and others in the performance community (that’s what we call the teams working on the core Performance domains)

Research shows that candidates from underrepresented backgrounds often don’t apply for roles unless they meet all the criteria — unlike majority candidates that meet significantly fewer of the requirements.

We strongly encourage you to apply if you’re at all interested: we’d love to learn how you can amplify our team with your unique experience!

We believe that inclusive businesses are better, not only for company performance, but for the world. We have a strong commitment to anti-racism and lead by example. Every step we make as a business towards anti-racism is another step we can take to support our customers in making a better world (of work). View our current commitments to anti-racism.

We ensure you have the tools and support you need to thrive, both inside and outside of work:

  • A MacBook — for you to do great work where it suits you
  • Share options — it’s important to us that everyone is an owner and can share in our success
  • Excellent parental leave and in-work support program — for those starting or growing their family
  • Flexible working arrangements — wherever we can we aim to make work support the life you want to lead
  • Fun and inclusive digital and (in the future) in-person events

And most importantly: an opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives.

Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the criteria, women and other marginalized folks tend to only apply when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but don't necessarily meet every single point on the job description, please still get in touch. We'd love to have a chat and see if you could be a great fit.
