Legal and Commercial counsel ⚖️
OwnHome’s mission is to turn renters into homeowners. We believe all Australians deserve the opportunity to build a life and family in the security of their own home, especially the 4.5m young Australians who don't own the home they live in.
As property prices have skyrocketed, millions of Australians have been left behind with no clear path to homeownership - forced to put their dreams of homeownership on hold. As a result, renters are missing out on a critical wealth-building opportunity: owning a home.
At OwnHome, we're building an on-ramp to homeownership – one that overcomes crippling deposit hurdles, is more flexible, and an overall better fit for the modern Australian family.
About the role:
OwnHome is very much a legal and financial structuring solution to the housing affordability crisis facing Australians. Therefore, astutely and confidently navigating the Australian regulatory landscape is absolutely critical to OwnHome’s success, along with all of the commercial / legal negotiations that go into building a new structured financial product in Australia that supports rent-to-own as an asset class.
Serve as OwnHome’s primary lawyer, advising on all aspects of our business, prioritising legal issues for the business
Product counseling (work closely with CEOs on OwnHome’s core products that requires creative legal guidance and balance risk versus reward)
Corporate governance (lead financing transactions, equity incentive plans, board and stockholder matters)
Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders in housing policy (agitate for changes to housing policy that help create new paths for aspiring homeowners in Australia)
Be the designated point of contact with any regulatory bodies, and manage any inquiries and audits
Work with our structured finance leads to help structure debt facilities
Continue to build out OwnHome’s compliance functions and processes for consumer and asset underwriting
Draft and negotiate agreements of all types
Build out OwnHome’s legal team as we scale
Example specific commercial / legal topics to be tackled:
Navigate an exemption to Victoria’s ban on rent-to-own (Ministerial exemption process) with support of external legal counsel
Work with state bodies focused on housing affordability to agitate for specific exemptions to burdensome regimes (e.g. stamp duty)
Review and help negotiate debt documents / contracts
