Advanced Navigation is a global leader in high-accuracy navigation systems with headquarters in Sydney, Australia. The company has a heavy engineering focus, with substantial R&D capability in Sydney and Perth. Our products are developed and manufactured in Australia and are designed to deliver critical navigation information across sea, land, and air platforms including surface, subsea assets, ground vehicles, and unmanned aerial vehicles applications. The Senior FPGA Engineer plays an integral role in developing our next generations of navigation and robotics products, with a particular focus on sensor development. This role's primary responsibility is the configuration of FPGA hardware for our products but also participates in embedded software development.

Role Responsibilities

Maintaining a high level of proficiency across all facets related to development with FPGAs, including the hardware description languages, the FPGA hardware, the tools that are used, and all other relevant considerations

Maintaining a good level of proficiency in embedded software development, including languages, tools and practices

Designing performant, correct configurations for the FPGA that are testable, maintainable and that meet all applicable requirements

Developing and testing software for embedded devices that is testable, maintainable and that meets all applicable requirements

Documenting designs, requirements, tests and test results, as required

Identifying the causes of reported defects quickly and accurately

Resolving reported defects in the configuration/software in a time frame consistent with agreed priorities.

Required Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) or equivalent experience & professional training

8+ years FPGA development experience, including large developments, and preferably both Intel and Xilinx devices

Timing constraints and timing closure

Debug techniques such as ChipScope and SignalTap

Safe clock crossing practices for multi-clock systems

Control clock frequency and phase via on-chip PLLs

Floating and fixed point signal processing techniques

High speed interfaces such as DDR and architecture based transceivers

Electrical communication layers, including differential signalling

Low level communication protocols including SPI and I2C

Knowledge of pin layout constraints with respect to signal grouping and differential pair limitations

Nice to have

Strong level of proficiency in C++

Strong level of proficiency in Java

Familiarity with Javascript, HTML and CSS

Familiarity with Matlab

Familiarity with Python

A strong background in physics or mathematics

An understanding of optics, as it pertains to instruments

A strong understanding of digital signal processing (DSP) techniques
