Reporting to the Director of R&D, the R&D Project Manager will be responsible for managing and leading complex projects involving multi-disciplinary teams with a strong high tech quotient in a rapidly-evolving industry. This role will suit a technically-minded individual with a strong interest in robotics, autonomy, advanced manufacturing or sensors who enjoys translating research and ideas into reality and keeping design teams well-organised and working to the right priorities.  

Main duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manage time, cost and scope of R&D projects to ensure their successful completion, including transition to manufacturing.
  • These will be a mix of internal projects aimed at improving manufacturing processes and sustaining engineering, and new product development projects as per roadmap.  
  • Manage stakeholder expectations and hold the team accountable for project goals 
  • Track project and team performance against schedules
  • Lead multidisciplinary project teams with diverse skill sets, including hardware, software, firmware and manufacturing engineering disciplines.
  • Regular and concise project progress reporting.
  • Help improve and document processes and procedures used by the R&D team
  • Required Skills & Experience:

  • Tertiary engineering qualification (Bachelor degree or higher), with a major in Mechatronics/Hardware/Computer Systems/Software or similar.
  • 5+ years relevant experience in a project or team management role, ideally one with both hardware and software elements.
  • Experience with advanced manufacturing methods will be well regarded
  • Defence industry experience will be well regarded.
  • Strong communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills to stay in top of a fast-moving design team
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Able to work with the big picture without losing grip of the details
