Athena Home Loans launched in 2019 to help Aussie borrowers save money and pay down their home loan faster. Our digital mortgage platform radically simplifies the application process passing on the savings to customers as better rates. Our customers are saving ~ $60,000 over the life of their loans. Since launch, Athena has settled over $2b in home loans, and saved borrowers over $200m in interest savings - growing to become one of Australia’s largest fintechs.

  

We have built Australia’s first cloud-native home loan platform, covering the full value chain to acquire, originate, service and fund residential mortgages. Fintechs targeting mortgages are typically only focusing on a narrow layer of the value chain (e.g. originations), then handing back to legacy bank systems. By tackling the full stack, Athena aims to cut the cost of running a mortgage business by 70% vs. legacy players, providing sustainable advantage.

Athena has raised $200m in equity funding to date via four funding rounds from leading investors including AirTree Ventures, Apex Capital, AustralianSuper, Hostplus, Macquarie Bank, RESIMAC Group, Rice Warner, Square Peg and Sunsuper. Most recently in May 2021, Athena closed $90m in Series D funding – the largest ever Australia-led venture capital investment round. We have won the award for Best emerging Fin-tech Organisation two years in a row! 

Role overview


As Head of Engineering, you will report into the CTO and lead a team of 30 engineers, with 4 direct reports. Your role will be focused on growing this team to 40+ over the next 6 months while achieving the highest standards for engineering disciplines, team culture, continuous delivery, quality assurance and innovation.

 The Role

  • Empower and develop a high performing team of Software, Salesforce, DevOps and Quality Engineers
  • Attract, hire and retain A grade players
  • Establish a mobile development team by the end of the year 
  • Ensure the guardrails that allow the team to move fast with high quality 
  • Maintain a culture of creativity and empowerment with the engineering team 
  • Lead across the company not just your own team
  • Empower your teams to make the right technical decisions

Requirements 

  • Ability to empower and develop people (managers, team leaders and engineers) 
  • Ability to attract, hire and retain A players
  • Successfully led a team of 30+ engineers and understands scaling challenges
  • Enthusiasm for the mission, company and technology
  • Can lead across the company not just your team
  • Anticipates future needs and what's next
  • Establish and maintain great relationships across the company
  • Experienced in transforming financial technology products is desirable
