The Synthetic Biologist will report to the Director of R&D and is responsible for producing commercially viable engineered algae. You will have a firm grasp of synthetic biology, microbiology and assay development. A successful candidate in this role will produce a genetic toolkit and implement metabolic engineering in our algae species. 


  • Develop and optimise methods for designing, assembling, transforming and isolating engineered algae strains;
  • Lead the identification, development, and testing of next-generation tools for high-throughput genetic engineering of algal cells. These tools should include direct genome editing as well as robust methods for the reliable and efficient introduction of transgenes into algal cells in a site-specific manner.
  • Design and implement metabolic engineering strategies to improve product yield from engineered algae strains;
  • Maintain laboratory records, and contribute to laboratory organisation and maintenance;
  • Organise and order inventory required for the uninterrupted execution of experiments;
  • Calibrate and maintain instruments relevant to your role;
  • Proactively identify and implement initiatives to improve the laboratory;
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment with the ability to adjust workload based on changing priorities.


  • Necessary: 
    • Ph.D. in Biological Engineering, Molecular Biology, or a related field
    • 3+ years of experience managing a molecular cloning, biologics production or equivalent team in industry or an academic foundry setting
    • Extensive hands-on laboratory experience with modern cloning techniques, including routine propagation of  cells lines, multiple transfection reagents/methods, developing transfection and activity verification strategies, assessments of cell health and viability, cell preservation techniques and scaled production in PC2 and/or cGMP compliant facilities 
  • Desirable:
    • Experience using Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) 
    • Experience of project management in a research or industry setting, ideally in a startup
