NICTA (National ICT Australia) is Australia’s Information Communications Technology (ICT) Research Centre of Excellence. NICTA is focused on improving academic ICT research and industry innovation and creating national wealth in Australia. The organization’s research addresses the technology challenges faced in the industry, the community, and the whole nation. Research at NICTA is undertaken within five large-scale research groups: computer vision, machine learning, mobile systems, optimization, and software systems. NICTA supports wealth creation by funding industry partnerships, startup companies, and research outcomes with major social impact and national benefit. Three business teams drive commercial outcomes in the domains of broadband and the digital economy; infrastructure, transport, and logistics; environment; and security. The organization’s researchers work on business team projects with an engineering and technology development team support and IP, legal, and other professional support. NICTA is funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Communications, the Australian Research Council through the ICT Centre of Excellence Program, the Australian Capital Territory, the New South Wales, Queensland and Victorian Governments, the Australian National University, the University of New South Wales, the University of Melbourne, the University of Queensland, the University of Sydney, Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology, Monash University, and other university partners. NICTA was founded in 2002 and is based in New South Wales, Australia with 15 companies and more than 700 people across five laboratories around the nation.
