At Huey the Bookbot we’re designing the future of book discovery. Driven by an incredible team boasting experience from the likes of the ABC and CSIRO, we’re focused on making it fun for children to find books they’ll love to read - starting with the world’s best book discovery experience. Designed for use by schools, libraries, retailers, and families this unique book discovery experience merges the digital and physical world by taking an holistic approach to big data, machine learning, and conversational interfaces. After recently closing our first round of funding, we’re entering our next stage of growth and are looking for a talented Full Stack Software Engineer.
The Role
Working closely with our Australian team, you’ll be helping to deliver a robust technology stack for one of the most exciting book discovery products in the world. You will lead the greenfield development of our book recommender including database design, API integrations, user accounts, frontend development and off-the-shelf machine learning deployments.
Responsibilities include:
- Development of high quality code for a book discovery platform using chatbots and cloud based systems (e.g. AWS, Google Cloud)
- Development of secure user accounts, reports and dashboards for schools, homes and public libraries
- Selection of appropriate technologies to build on existing work
- Connecting APIs to integrate with external systems
- Designing and managing databases for books, images and user accounts
- Developing machine learning pipelines for book recommendations
To work well with our talented team you will need to:
- Collaborate with a small cross functional team to discover, deliver, and validate product features with lean experiments
- Implement and assess weekly metrics across our funnel
- Build a culture of technical best practices and continuous improvement
- Communicate effectively with a remote and geographically spread team
- Enthusiastically approach unexpected challenges that come your way
- Bring your opinion and experience to design decisions, code reviews and product strategy
What we’re looking for:
With a highly successful, entrepreneurial team in place, we’re searching for an experienced Full Stack Developer with a demonstrable love of technology and an appreciation for books.
Essential:
- Commercial experience with very strong development skills in a language such as Golang, Java, Python, JavaScript, or similar
- Demonstrated experience in JavaScript and/or TypeScript for modern frontend web applications and modern frameworks (e.g. React, Angular)
- A solid working knowledge and understanding of databases
- A positive, friendly, collaborative attitude, with the ability to work with a diverse team
Desirable:
We will favourably consider candidates with any of the experience listed below. However we are open to applicants with diverse experiences and backgrounds and are particularly interested in candidates who like to learn on the job.
- Familiarity with large-scale software delivery
- Experience in cloud-based environments
- Interest in chatbots and/or recommendation systems
- A basic understanding of machine learning pipelines
