The majority of noise emitted from UAVs is generated by the propellers. This noise is a major issue when operating around humans and animals, and restricts their use in the majority of commercial applications. To solve this problem, the team at Dotterel have developed lightweight propeller shrouds, lined with sound-absorbing acoustic materials and low noise propellers. These passive technologies reduce noise pollution as experienced from the ground. Dotterel also develops onboard audio enabling technologies. These are software and hardware solutions for enhancing direct sound recording capability from the UAV.
