World's Biggest Garage Sale (WBGS) is a Brisbane based scale-up, designing solutions to commercialise the circular economy through the activation of dormant goods for good. We're building a company that maximises the value of goods already in the economy, through recycle, repurpose, reuse, and re-commerce. In doing so, we're diverting landfill, drawing wealth from waste, and creating employment opportunities. Currently, WBGS hosts large-scale local re-commerce events and is developing a digital platform enabling communities globally to reproduce these large-scale re-commerce events through a toolkit, this allows WBGS to provide positive impact for people, planet and profit for purpose on a global level. WBGS uses the circular economy principles of recycle, reuse and repurpose to harness potential waste (unwanted household goods) as a valuable resource, and preserve already made resources by maximising their lifetime. It is strongly aligned to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals particularly SDG12 ‘responsible consumption and production’ as it aims to reduce waste generation through prevention, recycling, and reuse of goods that would otherwise lie dormant in households and ultimately risk disposal in landfill. To date over 32,000 people in the community have been involved in WBGS events. WBGS have contributed an estimated social impact value of AU$1.7-million to the global economy. This is based around the economic impact of economic social value such as saving water, preventing carbon emissions, and diverting landfill waste. Other significant results from our events include: 3.3 million kilograms of goods diverted from potential landfill 990 million litres of water saved 594,000kgs of CO2 prevented from entering Earth's atmosphere Prevented 8250kgs of pesticides and chemicals from being used in production of new goods by activating circular principles of recycle, reuse and repurpose.
