About Us:

SunDrive is one of Australia's most exciting start-ups, operating in one of the world's most exciting spaces, renewable energy technology.
We are on a mission to unlock Solar's full potential by revolutionising how solar cells are made, to unlock new heights of efficiency, cost, and sustainability.

Founded in 2015 by two UNSW roommates (Vince Allen, a PhD student in solar and David Hu, a former investment banker), we have come a long way from the breakthrough made in their garage to producing the world’s most efficient commercial-sized solar cell.

In 2022, we secured $21 million in our Series A funding round and are backed by some of Australia’s top venture capital firms (Blackbird, Main Sequence, Virescent, and Mike Cannon-Brooke’s private investment fund, Grok), tech founders, a former Australian Prime Minister, and the Australian Government.

You will be part of a robust, agile, and dedicated solar team that brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to the Photovoltaics space. Some team members have been with SunDrive since its early days, growing alongside our mission (as you will), to revolutionise solar energy.

In this role, you’ll report directly to our Head of Characterisation and take on exciting challenges around, designing and conducting experiments to ensure our world record breaking solar cell production process is consistently improving, performing critical characterization techniques (including conceiving new methods) to determine areas of further efficiency improvement and play a key role in data collection and analysis.

You will focus on:

  • Design and implement characterisation methods for evaluating the performance and quality of our solar technology products, including solar cells and panels
  • Develop and validate new methods of characterisation to improve the accuracy and reliability of characterisation data.
  • Analyse and interpret characterisation data to identify trends, patterns and correlations to inform product development and improvement decisions.
  • Generate experimental and production reports, ensuring clear communication of results and recommended next steps.
  • Lead our efficiency modelling/simulation efforts to ensure our production runs and technical experiments results are within expected ranges.
  • Develop and interpret optical and electrical models for a range of technologies, including tandems and back-contact architectures.
  • Conduct basic troubleshooting of various pieces of equipment.
  • Work closely with various team members to ensure smooth delivery of production runs and technical experiments.
  • Support our technology commercialisation efforts with our industry partners, including ongoing partner site visits in China.
  • Provide key input and assistance in patent drafting and filing.
  • Provide key input to help shape SunDrive’s technology roadmap.
  • We would love you to have:

  • PhD in Solar PV
  • A sharp eye for detail and a diligent way of working.
  • Great communication skills, verbal and written, precise with wording.
  • Enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced environment with ambitious milestones.
  • Fluent in Mandarin.
  • Bonus if you bring:

  • Industry experience.
  • Deep knowledge of HJT cell architecture.
  • Deep chemistry knowledge.
  • Benefits @ SunDrive!
